You may have already noticed, the state of the planet, our inability to realise we are killing our life source, is a subject that is very close to my heart. It’s a problem that our society doesn’t deem important enough to actually do anything about. There have been few that have spoken out about it, most of what they say is rejected by mainstream media and the Herd look the other way feigning ignorance. Having said that, John Oliver, host of “Last Week Tonight” on HBO, did a spiel on Sunday night last about the amount of food waste in the US alone – over 40% of food or $165 million (yup million) worth of food each year makes it’s way to landfill. That’s enought to fill 730 football stadiums.
What people are oblivious to is that this food rots and releases methane gas into the atmosphere – that’s toxic fumes to us lay people. This gas is 20x more lethal than carbon dioxide. It’s also a main contributor to holding the heat into the planet without allowing it to be released into the atmosphere – he equates it to a massive dutch oven. Now that’s not a thought that holds easy with me …
One of his solutions – use the food to help feed the poor – there are too many children living under the poverty line in the US, already, there is no need for more. If you want to know the other solutions he has, watch this video – food for thought (yes, pun intended!).
Perhaps hitting people where it hurts most (their wallets) may be part of the solution to ensure they take notice … perhaps not. Unfortunately, time is not on our side.
